Honomu a little town, nestled amongst the lush jungle of the famous Hamakua Coast, know for its deep rich soil, was once a bustling center of the sugar industry. Now the historic town of Honomu is passed through daily by visitors on their way to view the spectacular Akaka falls, one of the most photogenic sights on the Big Island. Prepare for a pleasant walk on a paved loop trail that takes you into a world of dense tropical jungle, with giant plants fanning as big trees, dripping ferns and dense bamboo groves, gingers that sweeten the air and brightly colored heliconia. You can hear the thundering waterfall almost as soon as you enter the jungle and when the noise is almost deafing, you reach the lookout and see Akaka Falls as it plunges 420 feet in one sheer drop into the mushrooming clouds of spray below.
